June 19, 2006 - The Kansas City Business Journal reports that "Browsersoft Inc. has been selected to implement a secure health records exchange system for San Antonio-based Access to Care for the Uninsured (ACU) ...".
The system is being funded through a grant from the Healthy Communities Access Program administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Browsersoft, a Lenexa-based firm specializing in open-source software development, is part of Connecting for Health, one of four consortiums chosen in November to receive $18.6 million in federal grants to create prototypes for the proposed Nationwide Health Information Network.
ACU's goal is to use OpenHRE™ software developed by Browsersoft to exchange health records among local health systems within the greater San Antonio area to increase the quality of care for uninsured people.
"The health records exchange system will allow care providers the ability to view a consolidated presentation of a patient's health history assembled from multiple points of care," Dewey Biscotto, ACU's executive director, said in a release.
ACU picked Browsersoft after examining health exchange efforts and software development firms throughout the country, the release said.
"Because OpenHRE™ uses health software already in place, our costs for developing and maintaining a health records exchange are dramatically reduced," Alesha Adamson, ACU's director of technology, said in the release.
